Today we shall be looking at the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. This is a pretty good phone but I for one don’t fancy it too much. The reason why I don’t really like it that much is because of that white part on the phone underneath the screen. I can’t find a single purpose for that thing, but I can only assume it’s there for decorative purposes. Also, the Sony Ericsson Xperia P is seemingly different from the Xperia U only because of that part underneath the phone. And the difference isn’t even that massive, it’s the same thing but with different colors ( as in one’s white and the other one is pink ). Still, enough with the dilly dally and let us move on to the review / preview of this phone.
Before asking, I have no idea when it is supposed to come out. All I can say for certain is that it was announced in February 2012. Usually the release date is speculated to be a month away from the announcement date ( or more, depending on the case ). People think that it will come out in Q2, but then again people have been wrong before and you can’t know for sure anything. And also, before telling me that is already available or something like that, keep in mind that I only say that a phone is available when it can be purchased anywhere ( world-wide ) and without any contractual restrictions. I felt the need of mentioning the contractual restrictions part since I have seen many cases in the past in which they give you the product on the condition that you get a very strict contract with that company. That contract can also be compared to the contract which you sign in order to sell your soul to Satan.
Well, leaving all those behind, let us begin this little review / preview, shall we ?
- Processor : Dual-core 1 GHz
- RAM : 1 GB
- Android OS : 2.3 Gingerbread
- Camera : 8 MP
- Display : 540 x 960 pixels, 4.0 inches (~275 ppi pixel density)
Let’s begin by taking a look at the body of this Android Phone. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P is about 122 x 59.5 x 10.5 mm big and it weighs about 120 grams. As something special about this phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has Touch-Sensitive Controls. With all these, I still don’t know what the small plastic part there is for.
Moving on to the display of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. This phone has an LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen with approximately 16 million colors. The resolution reached by the phone is approximately 540 x 960 pixels. The screen itself is 4.0 inches big and the pixel density of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P is about 275 ppi. I’d say that’s more than sufficient for a screen this size. There is absolutely no point in striving to get a pixel density of more than 300 since the human eye can only perceive up to a point of about 250. The screen of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has multitouch which can work with as much as 4 fingers. Also, it has a scrat-resistant glass display as screen protection. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has a few more things installed on it which affect the display. Those things are : Sony WhiteMagic technology, Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine and Timescape UI.
Let’s take a gander at the sound abilities of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. The alert types supported by this phone are vibration and MP3 ringtones. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has a loudspeaker and 3.5 mm jack. There are no more details about the sound part, as if there are any sound enhancements or whatnot.
Moving on to the memory part of this phone. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P has about 16 GB of internal storage space. However, only 13 GB are user-available and the rest are only usable by the system of this phone. If the internal storage space isn’t enough to satisfy your greed for space, tough luck since the Sony Ericsson Xperia P does not have a memory card slot. It does have 1 GB of RAM though, which allow for this phone to be capable of quite a bit of multitasking.
Now let us take a look at the data connectivity of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. This phone has GPRS of up to 100 KB/s and EDGE of up to 296 KB/s. Also, this phone has HSDPA with speeds of approximately 14.4 MB/s and HSUPA of approximately 5.76 MB/s. The WLAN of this phone is a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi hotspot and DLNA. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and EDR. It also has NFC ( which not many phones have ). The USB connection of this phone is MicroUSB v2.0 with USB On-the-Ago support.
Moving on to the camera of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. This Android Phone has an 8 MP camera with a resolution of approximately 3264 x 2448 pixels. The camera of this phone has many features too. Such features include as : autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama and also, image stabilization. The camera of this phone also has a video recorder capable of recording in 1080p full HD at approximately 30 fps. The video recording option of the main camera also has its own features, such as : autofocus and video light. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has a secondary camera. The secondary camera, however, isn’t that powerful. It’s a mere VGA camera.
Moving on to the hardware part of the review / preview of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. The Processor of this phone is a Dual-Core 1 GHz processor with a STE U8500 chipset and a DB8500 graphic card. As you can see, quite a powerful hardware spec but then again there are many others more powerful phones out there. Also, for a phone coming out in Q2, it seems to lack the Quad-Core which most Android Phones announced in February seemed to have. That is sufficient for me to not like this phone.
Let us now take a look at the Operating System of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P. The Android OS version that this phone will come out with is Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread. There is a planned upgrade for 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. However, there is no solid data of the release date of the phone, nor is there any data on when the Sony Ericsson Xperia P will get the Ice Cream Sandwich update. I guess only time will tell.
Now let us take a look at the other features of this phone. The sensors of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P are as follows : accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensors and compass. Recently, most phones announced at the time of this one have these features. The messaging of this phone can e done via : SMS ( in threaded view ), MMS, E-Mail, IM and Push E-Mail. The browser of this phone supports HTML5 and it also has Adobe Flash. The Sony Ericsson Xperia P also has Stereo FM radio with RDS. The GPS of this phone supports A-GPS and the Java of this phone is available only via Java MIDP emulation. The colors in which this phone will come out in are : silver, black and red.
Here is a short list of some of the features of the Sony Ericsson Xperia P :
- SNS integration
- HDMI port
- Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic
- MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV player
- MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV player

the human eye can percieve 300ppi noob :/ as said by steve jobs
Whatever dude. Frankly I see no difference between 250 and 300. But then again, I never really cared that much to look, unlike all of the Steve Jobs / Apple fans around.
