Today we shall be reviewing the LG Enlighten VS700. This device is not a regular GSM device so it won’t actually function with the normal GSM networks. It was released under a few different names for a few different providers. It is known as the LG Enlighten for Verizon and also as LG Eclipse for Bell Canada. Still, even those accustomed to the LG Eclipse name will probably refer to it more as the LG Enlighten than the LG Eclipse. I’m not saying that because I have a problem with the Bell Canada provider, it’s just that people world-wide tend to call it that way since Verizon is more wide-spread and has more world-renown than Bell Canada. It’s the common logic of every human being to always refer to the one from the “bigger man” than the smaller one. I know this isn’t exactly a phone from 2012 or a new one, but considering the economy you’re more likely of getting your hands on this one than on a Galaxy S2 or iPhone 4S or some such.
Well enough with cryptic hints and such, let us commence the review of the LG Enlighten VS700.
GENERAL
We shall begin by taking a look at the more general aspects of the LG Enlighten VS700, mainly the supported networks and the release and announcement dates. The networks supported by the LG Enlighten VS700 are both 2G and 3G networks. They are as following : CDMA 800 / 1900 ( the 2G ones ) and CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO ( as the 3G one ). This device was announced in September 2011 and was released shortly after in the same month.
BODY
We shall move on now to analyzing the finer points of the aspect of this device, mainly : the size and weight of the phone and whether or not it has any design spots that may set it apart from the rest of the Android devices. The size of the LG Enlighten VS700 is as following ; 114 x 58 x 15 mm. It weighs somewhere around 157 grams. The LG Enlighten VS700 also has slide-able QWERTY keyboard. I tend to not trust the device with slide-able parts. My reasons, remember the older phones which were on this sliding thing ? Those used to break quite easily after two or three months of usage. The smartphones of today, they can break even easier considering that about 50% of the phone is a screen and a screen is made of glass. But there’s nothing we can do right now about it. We just have to deal with it.
DISPLAY
Moving on the display of the LG Enlighten VS700 where we shall see : the type of screen, the size and resolution of said screen as well as the pixel density and whether or not this screen has any distinguishable parts to it. The screen of the LG Enlighten VS700 is a TFT capacitive touchscreen with around 256 thousand colors ( not the best of screens, but at least it gets the job done ). The size of the screen is around 3.2 inches and the resolution reached by this screen is around 320 x 480 pixels. The pixel density of the LG Enlighten VS700 is around 180 ppi. The screen of the LG Enlighten VS700 also has multitouch, although it doesn’t say how many fingers can run simultaneously on it.
SOUND
Moving on to the sound part of the LG Enlighten VS700’s review where we can find details about : the alert types, the loudspeaker and 3.5 mm jack as well as any means of enhancing the audio quality of the device. The LG Enlighten VS700 doesn’t have any sound enhancement whatsoever which means it’s quite basic as far as sound is concerned. The alert types are : vibration, MP3 and WAV ringtones. The LG Enlighten VS700 also has a Loudspeaker and a 3.5 mm jack on it.
MEMORY
Moving on to the memory part of the LG Enlighten VS700’s review where we shall cover the internal storage space and ways of increasing it and the RAM memory. This device sadly has no RAM whatsoever. Either that or my sources are incorrect, although that is rarely the case. The internal storage space of the LG Enlighten VS700 is around 150 MB. Upon purchasing this device you get a Micro SD card of 2 GB. If you need more than that, any Micro SD card will work as long as it doesn’t exceed 32 GB.
DATA CONNECTION
We shall look now at the data connection of the LG Enlighten VS700 and try to cover : the GPRS, the EDGE, the Speed and WLAN and also the Bluetooth and USB connections. The GPRS and EDGE of this phone is completely absent, as is the case of most non-GSM devices. The same thing as all the non-GSM devices, the speed of this device is a Rev. A up to 3.1 MB/s. The WLAN of the LG Enlighten VS700 is a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi hotspot. The Bluetooth of the LG Enlighten VS700 is a Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP and EDR. The connection between this device and the PC is done via the LG Enlighten VS700’s Micro USB v2.0 port.
CAMERA
In this part of the review we shall be analyzing the camera of the LG Enlighten VS700 and its capabilities. The main camera is a 3.15 MP one capable of photographing at resolutions as big as 2048 x 1536 pixels. The main camera’s features are as following : autofocus, geo-tagging. The video recorder of this device is capable of recording in VGA quality at around 24 frames per second. The LG Enlighten VS700 doesn’t have a secondary camera.
BATTERY LIFE
The battery of this device and how long it can function is what you will find here. The LG Enlighten VS700 has a standard Li-Ion 1540 mAh battery. It is capable of working for around 810 hours in stand-by mode and for up to 6 hours of talk time. Be that as it may, once you play some music or use a game or app it will die pretty quickly.
HARDWARE
In this part we shall analyze the processor, the mother board and the graphics card. The LG Enlighten VS700 isn’t all that strong as far as hardware goes, the device having a mere Qualcomm MSM7627T chipset, an 800 MHz Single-Core processor and an Adreno 200 GPU. However, as mentioned before, this device is way more affordable than other high-end devices.
SOFTWARE
This part will tell us what the OS version of the LG Enlighten VS700 is and whether or not it can be upgraded to a later version. The LG Enlighten VS700 has Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread installed on it and it doesn’t seem to be able to handle an update to a future version of the Android OS.
FEATURES
In this part of the review we shall be discussing the features and capabilities, as well as the practicality of the LG Enlighten VS700. The sensors of the LG Enlighten VS700 are as following : Accelerometer, Proximity and Compass. The messaging on the LG Enlighten VS700 are done via : SMS ( with threaded view ), MMS, E-Mail, Push Mail and even IM. The browser of this device uses HTML and has integrated support for Adobe Flash. This device also doesn’t have a Radio, but I’ve mentioned on all too many occasions how to fix that. The LG Enlighten VS700 has A-GPS support and Java via Java MIDP emulation. The only color that the LG Enlighten VS700 is available in is Black.
Here is a brief list of what this device can do :
