Today we’ll be reviewing the Alcatel OT-991. The Alcatel OT-991 is a pretty good phone, however, it’s not quite that powerful. Then again, most Alcatel phones are weak nowadays. For some reason they just can’t keep up with the high demand of power brought by today’s ever-changing market. However, the world needs such phones as well since they are weaker, and thus, cheaper than the rest of the phones. As I don’t aim to waste a lot of time with intros, I say : let us commence this little review.
SUMMARY
As promised, I am going to start all my articles from now on ( the ones about devices, anyway ) with a brief summary of what the phone is good at and what are its weak points. Unfortunately, the Alcatel OT-991 has mostly weak points. One of its only strengths may be the fact that the Alcatel OT-991 is a Dual-SIM phone. Its screen isn’t that great, but then again, neither is the camera, hardware or software. Those things in mind, don’t hope that this phone will be too good for apps and games, especially not the newer ones. However, with all there things, the Alcatel OT-991 still looks fairly awesome and it probably doesn’t cost that much either. This is a good idea to consider if you want a phone with a nice look, Android on it and that can be pretty reliable at times.
GENERAL
We’ll now take a brief look at the general aspects of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the supported networks and the announcement and release dates. The Alcatel OT-991 uses both 2G and 3G networks and those networks are as following : 2G ( GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900 ) and 3G ( HSDPA 850, HSDPA 1900 and HSDPA 2100 on SIM 1 and HSDPA 850, HSDPA 1700 and HSDPA 2100 on SIM 2 ). The Alcatel OT-991 was announced in February 2012 and is expected to come out somewhere around Q3 of 2012. That’s about all that I can say for the general stuff, so let’s move on now.
BODY
Next up we’ll be taking a look at the body of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the size and weight of the device and see whether or not the Alcatel OT-991 has any particularities related to the body. The Alcatel OT-991 is around 122 x 68 x 10.8 mm big and it weighs somewhere around 131.3 grams. The only particularity the Alcatel OT-991 has is that it has Touch-Sensitive Controls instead of frontal buttons, which seems to become pretty common a thing among Android device. That’s about all I can say about the body of the Alcatel OT-991, so let’s move on now.
DISPLAY
Next is time to take a look at the display of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the screen type, the screen size, the screen resolution and pixel density as well as see whether or not the Alcatel OT-991 has any screen protection and any particularities related to the screen. The Alcatel OT-991 has a TFT capacitive touchscreen with around 256 thousand colors. The size of the screen is around 4.0 inches and it can house a resolution of approximately 320 x 480 pixels. The pixel density of the Alcatel OT-991 is around 144 ppi. This phone also has Multitouch, however, it isn’t the advanced sort of multitouch that can support more than two simultaneous fingers on it. Sadly, the Alcatel OT-991 has no screen protection, so you’ll have to be extra careful with it. Then again, when you spend so much on a tech product you usually have a mini heart attack when you see it drop so most people are careful with said products. The Alcatel OT-991 has no particularities related to its screen and no UIs installed on it. That’s all I can say about the display, so let’s move on now.
SOUND
Next up we’ll be taking a look at the audio output capabilities of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out whether or not the Alcatel OT-991 has any audio enhancements whatsoever, since most people already know that the Android phones have both loudspeaker, 3.5 mm jack and can use anything as their Alert Types. Sadly, the Alcatel OT-991 has no sound enhancement whatsoever on it, be it software-based or otherwise. That’s all I can say about this part, so let’s move on now.
MEMORY
Next up we’ll be taking a brief look at the memory of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find a bit of info about the RAM, the internal storage space and ways of expanding said storage space. Unfortunately, the Alcatel OT-991 has no RAM memory, fact which really raises some serious questions about how well it can function. The internal storage space of the Alcatel OT-991 is around 150 MB, which isn’t a whole lot. However, there is a solution for all of you size nuts that need a lot of storage space : the Micro SD slot which can use any card of up to 32 GB. That’s it for the memory, so let’s move on now to the next part of the review.
DATA CONNECTION
Next up we’ll be taking a look at the connectivity of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the GPRS and EDGE of the device, the Speed and WLAN as well as the Bluetooth, USB and other ( if any ) connections. The EDGE is also a Class 12 one, however, it isn’t mentioned what speed it can reach. The Speed per say of the device is HSDPA at 7.2 MB/s. The WLAN of this phone is a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi hotspot. The Bluetooth of this phone is a v4.0 one with A2DP. The USB port of the Alcatel OT-991 is a Micro USB v2.0 one. That’s all I can say about the connectivity of the Alcatel OT-991, so let’s move on now.
CAMERA
Next up we’ll be taking a look at the camera of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the main and secondary cameras of the Alcatel OT-991 and see what features and capabilities they have. The main camera of the Alcatel OT-991 is a 3.15 MP one that can photograph at resolutions of around 2048 x 1536 pixels. The only features of the Alcatel OT-991’s camera are as following : LED flash and geo-tagging. The Alcatel OT-991 is also capable of video recording at an unknown video quality ( most probably VGA ). Unfortunately, this phone has no secondary frontal camera. That’s all I can say about this part, so let’s move on now to the next part.
BATTERY LIFE
Next up we’ll be taking a look at the battery of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the battery type of the Alcatel OT-991 and see how long this battery can function. The battery of the Alcatel OT-991 is a Standard Li-Ion 1500 mAh battery. This battery can function for up to 400 hours of stand-by time and up to 12 hours talk-time in 2G and 10 hours talk-time in 3G. That’s about all I can say for the battery, so let’s move on now to the next part of the review.
HARDWARE
Next up we’ll be taking a brief look at the hardware of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the three main hardware components : processor, motherboard and graphics card. The Alcatel OT-991, unfortunately, has only one of the three, and that is the processor : a Single-Core 800 MHz processor, to be more exact. That being said, there is no more to discuss on this part, so let’s move on now.
SOFTWARE
Next it is time to take a look at the software of the Alcatel OT-991. Here you can find out a bit about the OS version of the Alcatel OT-991 and see whether or not it can be upgraded to a better one. The Android OS version of the Alcatel OT-991 is v2.3 Gingerbread. This being an old OS for this time, it is very disappointing to see that it can not be upgraded to the latest version, and there is no news of any future update. That being said, let us move on now to the final part of the review.
FEATURES
Next up we’ll be taking a look at the Alcatel OT-991’s features and capabilities. The sensors of the Alcatel OT-991 are as following : Accelerometer, Proximity and Compass. The messaging on the Alcatel OT-991 is done via the following : SMS ( with Threaded View ), MMS, E-Mail and IM. The browser of this phone uses WAP 2.0 or xHTML and regular HTML, but has no integrated support for Adobe Flash, which could prove somewhat problematic. The Alcatel OT-991 also has a Stereo FM radio with RDS, a GPS with A-GPS support and Java via Java MIDP emulation. This phone is available in the following colors : Black and White.
Here is a brief list of what the Alcatel OT-991 can do :
- SNS integration
- MP3/AAC+/WAV/WMA player
- MP4/H.264 player
- Document viewer
- Photo viewer/editor
- Organizer
