Today we shall be reviewing the Pantech Burst. This phone was created for AT&T and it is a 4G phone. It uses the normal networks we are all used to and on top of that has support for the LTE networks as well. This is a relatively new phone being released in January 2012, so you can have high expectations for it since it probably has some nice hardware on it for this period of time. However, Pantech has had the unfortunate habit of creating phones that are usually lacking an essential component.
But you shall probably see that for yourself as you read on. Without further ado, let us begin this little review.
GENERAL
We shall begin by looking at the more general aspects of the Pantech Burst. You can find details here about the supported networks and the network types as well as the announcement and the release date of the device. The supported networks of the Pantech Burst are as following : GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 ( the 2G ones ), HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 ( the 3G ones ) and LTE 700 MHz Class 17 / 1700 / 2100 ( the 4G ones ). The Pantech Burst was announced in January 2012 and was released shortly after during the same month, as you’ve probably already read, in the same month.
BODY
Following up is a brief look into the aspect of the Pantech Burst. While I can honestly say that this device looks stunning with its sleek and somewhat simplistic look, many people would agree that looks can be deceiving. It’s not necessarily the case of this device, but let’s not rule out any possibilities. You can find here details about the size, weight and whether or not the device has any distinguishing “birthmarks” on it. The Pantech Burst is around 126.5 x 62.5 x 11.4 mm big. It weighs somewhere around 122.5 grams. Also, the Pantech Burst has Touch Sensitive Controls instead of buttons on the frontal panel.
DISPLAY
Now we shall move on to review the display of the Pantech Burst. You can find information here about the type of screen, the screen size, the screen’s resolution and its pixel density as well as whether or not the device has any “birthmarks” that would make it stand out from the crowd. The type of screen of the Pantech Burst is Super AMOLED capacitive with 256 thousand colors. I honestly find this almost impossible to believe. Why make it Super AMOLED ( one of the highest quality possible ) with 256 thousand colors. But then again, I’ve said it before that Pantech devices are a bit unusual. The screen size is 4.0 inches. In those 4.0 inches it houses a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of around 233 ppi. The Pantech Burst also has Multitouch, same as many other Android Devices.
SOUND
Following up is the audio review of the Pantech Burst. Here you may find details about the alert types, the speaker and audio jack as well as whether or not the Pantech Burst has any means of sound enhancement to better your audio experience. Apparently the Pantech Burst doesn’t have any sound enhancement whatsoever, so one may say that this device is pretty “standard” as far as audio output is concerned. The alert types of the Pantech Burst are as following : vibration, MP3 and WAV ringtones. The Pantech Burst also has a Loudspeaker and a 3.5 mm jack.
MEMORY
The memory part of the review is what’s next. Here you can find details about the internal storage space and ways of expanding it and the RAM memory. The Pantech Burst apparently doesn’t have any RAM memory so there isn’t much to be told about it. I guess you can only resume my opinion of the lack of RAM in one word : disappointment. The storage space of the Pantech Burst is 16 GB and should you require more feel free to use the Micro SD card to expand it with up to 32 GB.
DATA CONNECTION
This part of the review is oriented on the analysis of the data connectivity of the Pantech Burst. You can find info here about the GPRS and EDGE, the Speed of the device and the WLAN as well as the Bluetooth and USB connections. The Pantech Burst has both GPRS and EDGE but I have no idea what class they are. Same goes for the speed of the device, the Pantech Burst having HSDPA, HSUPA and LTE speeds, but with no info about the MB/s of each. The WLAN of the Pantech Burst is a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi hotspot. The Bluetooth of the Pantech Burst is a Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP. The Pantech Burst can connect to the PC via its Micro USB v2.0 port.
CAMERA
The review of the camera of the Pantech Burst is what follows. You can find info here about the main and secondary cameras as well as their features and capabilities. The main camera is a 5 MP snapper capable of photographing at around 2592 x 1944 pixels. The features of the Pantech Burst’s main camera are as following : autofocus, LED flash and geo-tagging. The video recording abilities of the main camera are limited to 720p HD with a steady 30 frames per second ( which is pretty damn good for a 5 MP camera ). Also, the Pantech Burst has a secondary VGA frontal camera but there’s no sense in talking to much about it.
BATTERY LIFE
Now we shall be examining the battery of the Pantech Burst since it’s one of the most essential components in any mobile device. You can find info here about the type of battery and how long it can function. The Pantech Burst has a Standard Li-Ion 1650 mAh battery. Its battery is capable of functioning for up to 240 hours in stand-by mode. The talk time of the Pantech Burst is as much as 4 hours and 30 minutes.
HARDWARE
This part of the review is oriented towards the hardware components of the Pantech Burst. The ones to be reviewed are the : processor, motherboard and graphics card. The processor of the Pantech Burst is a Dual-Core 1.5 GHz Scorpion. The chipset of this device is a Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon and the GPU is an Adreno 220. All and all it’s a pretty good hardware spec, as I’ve probably already said, but without RAM I doubt it can run so well.
SOFTWARE
This part of the review is oriented towards the analysis of the software of the device. We shall see here what OS the Pantech Burst has and whether or not it can be upgraded to a better or future one. The Pantech Burst comes equipped with Android OS v2.3.5 Gingerbread and it isn’t upgrade-able to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. However, good enough for an OS.
FEATURES
Here we shall discuss the more general features and capabilities of the Pantech Burst. The Pantech Burst’s sensors are as following : Accelerometer, Proximity and Compass. The messaging on the Pantech Burst can be done via : SMS ( with Threaded View ), MMS, E-Mail, Push Mail, IM and RSS. The browser of the Pantech Burst uses HTML and has integrated support for Adobe Flash. The radio of the Pantech Burst is absent however I believe you may change that by downloading a Radio App or just by listening directly from the website of the station ( since most stations have online broadcasts ). The Pantech Burst has both a GPS with A-GPS support and Java via Java MIDP emulation. The colors available for the Pantech Burst are as following : Titanium and Ruby Red.
