Today we shall be reviewing the Samsung Droid Charge I510. This phone was specifically designed for Verizon, that’s why it says Verizon on top of it ( as you can already tell ). The Samsung Droid Charge I510 is known under many names : Samsung SCH-I510, Samsung Inspiration, Samsung Stealth, Samsung Stealth V, Samsung 4G LTE, Samsung Galaxy S Aviator. However, I shall only refer to it as Samsung Droid Charge I510 during this review. Know that this is not a traditional GSM device, the Samsung Droid Charge I510 being a 4G phone ( and you already know by now that 4G phones don’t run in normal GSM networks ).
GENERAL
This part of the review is dedicated towards finding out the networks and release date of the device. The networks supported by the Samsung Droid Charge I510 are as following : 2G networks ( CDMA 800 / 1900 ), 3G networks ( CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO ) and 4G networks ( LTE 700 MHz Class 13 ). This phone was announced in January 2011 and released shortly after in May 2011.
BODY
This part of the review is focused more on the aspect of the device, things such as size, weight and distinguishing features. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 is around 130 x 68 x 12 mm big, around as big as the Galaxy S1 and weighs around 143 grams. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 also has Touch-Sensitive Controls, although I’m not exactly sure what to believe about this one since they look kind of like buttons up close. I haven’t had the pleasure of working with it myself so I’ll just lay both ideas out there for you : it either has touch sensitive controls or buttons, but it’s a good phone nonetheless.
DISPLAY
This part of the review is focused mostly on the display of the device, specifically : the type of screen, the screen’s size, resolution and pixel density as well as the existence of any distinguishing marks tied to the display. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 has a Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen with around 16 million colors. The size of the screen is around 4.3 inches and the resolution reached by said screen is around 480 x 800 pixels. The Samsung Droid Charge I510’s screen has a pixel density of approximately 217 ppi and it also has Multitouch. No other signs that make it stand out of the crowd like UIs or things like that, but I’d say this should suffice.
SOUND
This part of the review is dedicated towards the audible capabilities of the device, things such as the alert types, loudspeaker and 3.5 mm jack, as well as the existence of any form of sound enhancement. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 has Vibration, MP3 and WAV ringtones as alert types. It also has both the Loudspeaker and the 3.5 mm jack. However, it doesn’t have any for of sound enhancement whatsoever. One may say that this phone is pretty standard as far as sound goes.
MEMORY
This part of the review covers the memory of the device, mainly : the internal storage space and ways of increasing it and the RAM memory. Now the RAM part of this device is unclear to me. Certain sources claim it doesn’t have any, however since that is a bit implausible, we’ll just go ahead and look at the other sources which claim that the Samsung Droid Charge I510 has about 512 MB of RAM. Leaving it at that, let us take a look at the storage space. Now the Samsung Droid Charge I510 comes with 2 GB of internal storage space, however, if that isn’t enough to suit your needs you can always upgrade it via the MicroSD card which can be of any size as long as it doesn’t exceed 32 GB.
DATA CONNECTION
This part of the review focuses on the data connectivity of the Samsung Droid Charge I510. Things found here are details about the : GPRS, EDGE, Speed, WLAN, Bluetooth and USB connections. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 doesn’t have either GPRS nor EDGE. Actually, few 4G phones do. The Samsung Droid Charge I510’s speed is Rev. A of up to 3.1 MB/s and LTE which runs up to 15 MB/s. The WLAN of the Samsung Droid Charge I510 is a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g with DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot. The Bluetooth of the Samsung Droid Charge I510 is a Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP. The connection between the Samsung Droid Charge I510 and the PC can be done via the Samsung Droid Charge I510’s MicroUSB v2.0 port.
CAMERA
This part of the review will cover the camera of the Samsung Droid Charge I510, more exactly : the main and secondary camera, their features and their capabilities. The main camera is a wonderful 8 MP snapper capable of photographing at around 3264 x 2448 pixels. The features of the camera are : autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus and face and smile detection. The main camera is also capable of recording video but there aren’t any details about the quality of the recordings. Also, the Samsung Droid Charge I510 has a secondary 1.3 MP frontal camera.
BATTERY LIFE
This part covers the battery life of the Samsung Droid Charge I510, which we know is very important in any device. The type of battery and the time it can function under which circumstances is what you can find here. The battery of the Samsung Droid Charge I510 is a Standard Li-Ion 1600 mAh battery. It is capable of functioning for around 280 hours of stand-by time and about 11 hours of talk time.
HARDWARE
This part focuses more on the hardware of the Samsung Droid Charge I510, more exactly : the three great components : processor, mother board and graphics card. The processor of the Samsung Droid Charge I510 is a 1GHz Cortex-A8 single core processor. The chipset and GPU are as following : Hummingbird mother board and PowerVR SGX540 graphics card. All and all it’s a pretty powerful set of hardware.
SOFTWARE
This part of the review is focused mostly on the software of the Samsung Droid Charge I510, mainly : the version of the operating system and possibilities of upgrading it. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 has only Android v2.2 Froyo on it, with no official possibility of upgrading to a better version of the Android OS. It will have to do, though.
FEATURES
This final part of the review focuses more on the features and capabilities of the device. The Samsung Droid Charge I510’s sensors are as following : Accelerometer, Proximity and Compass. The messaging on this phone can be done via : SMS ( with threaded view ), MMS, E-Mail, Push Mail, IM and even RSS. The browser of the Samsung Droid Charge I510 uses HTML5 and supports Adobe Flash. The Samsung Droid Charge I510 has no radio, but I’ve mentioned before how you can fix that problem. This device also has support for A-GPS and has Java via Java MIDP emulation. The only color available for the Samsung Droid Charge I510 is Black.
